The City was build in a lagoon in ancient times to be more protected by invaders. Slowly their inhabitants become very influent thanks to their military and commercial skills. At one point they extended influence east so far as Constantinople. They were organised in a republic with one leader: The Doge, meaning the Duke. For many hundred of years the republic dominate, prospered, fight for survival till Napoleon conquest.
Then passed few new “owners” till it joined the newly made Italian Kingdom just about 150 years Ago. Its treasures have been preserved for you to have it! Or better to take a look at it! Famous ancient paintings, ancient sculptures sometimes looted by Venetians themselves, glorious palaces. All in a fairy-tale atmosphere without cars where people move walking or by water boats. Iconic Gondolas are nowadays mostly for tourists.
